Case Study: Damaged Precast Concrete Repairs

Wastewater & Sewerage Concrete Repairs

Time is of essence when dealing with concrete repairs, especially the works that involve repair and restoration of wastewater and sewerage facilities. The exposure of concrete to water, waste, and chemicals over time leads to concrete deterioration and cracking. Regular upkeep and timely repairs are imperative to prevent system failure that could lead to contamination of water sources and disruption of essential services.

SURFASOLOGY’S concrete repair system is reliable and fast curing shifting the perception of traditional concrete repair works. The repair mortars we use develop similar strength levels to concrete within 24 hours. We design and install concrete repair that is required for specific project’s needs offering reduced plant downtime.

Case Study: Lakeland Dairies Complex

Recently, our sulphate resistant structural grade cementitious repair mortar was supplied to this high-profile project.

Damaged Precast Concrete Repairs

Lakeland Dairies is one of the largest dairy co-operatives in Europe with a rich history dating back nearly 130 years, which is committed to serving the needs of farmers, customers and communities.

Over the years the wastewater caused descaling and damage to the reinforced concrete in the waste-water containment tanks in the Lakeland Dairies Complex. The requirement was to repair the concrete without the use of formwork, ensuring that the capacity of the tanks is not reduced.

In order to meet these requirements, Velosit structural repair system was specified.

Cementitious corrosion protection and concrete primer – Velosit CP 201 – was applied to the properly prepared reinforced concrete substrate. It is designed as bonding bridge for the repair mortars on critical substrates. Velosit CP 201 provides very good adhesion to concrete and masonry, minimises shrinkage/expansion, and offers good resistance against aggressive media with a pH range of 3-12.

The restoration of the concrete was completed using Velosit SR 207 – sulphate resistant, high build structural repair mortar, specifically designed for repairs in sewerage and wastewater structures. Velosit SR 207 provides excellent workability, minimal shrinkage/expansion; it is hydrophobic and is open to foot traffic after 3-4 hours. Velosit SR 207 offers good resistance against CO2 and Chloride penetration due to a very tight pore structure; it is resistant to aggressive media with a pH range of 3-12.

The products comply with, and all works were completed in accordance with EN 1504-9.

Carolan Murphy Limited successfully completed major restoration works to the reinforced concrete in the wastewater containment tanks in the Lakeland Dairies Complex. Carolan Murphy Ltd. are based in Co. Cavan with an established reputation of a reliable, responsible and cost-efficient contractor that is keen to apply modern construction methods.

We have used Velosit CP 201 and Velosit SR 207 recently in successful repairs of worn and damaged precast concrete tanks and general concrete surfaces at factory locations for Lakeland Dairies.

The materials were applied without any difficulty by following the clear product application guidelines and they have solved longstanding issues. Since our first use of these products, we have returned to them and used them on a variation of repairs to concrete in areas that are subject to conditions that ordinary concrete is not able to cope with.

I would recommend the product to anyone who needs to repair concrete that has been damaged by Ph levels in an industrial setting. We find that when we are asked to solve problems with damaged materials that SURFASOLOGY will invariably have a suitable solution.
